One road, four worlds

The drive starts in pine forest above Shimla, follows the Sutlej into Kinnaur, then crosses into the cold desert of Spiti where the green stops and the rock takes over.

You sleep in villages, not resort towns. Apple orchards in Sangla, a cliff monastery at Dhankar, the highest post office on earth at Hikkim, and Chandratal on the way out over Kunzum La.

Before you book

Kunzum La tops out at 4,590m and you sleep above 3,600m in Kaza. Mild altitude symptoms are normal. The route is built to gain height slowly, with an acclimatisation day at Kalpa. Drink water, skip alcohol for the first few days, and speak to your doctor first if you have a heart or respiratory condition.
