One road, four worlds
The drive starts in pine forest above Shimla, follows the Sutlej into Kinnaur, then crosses into the cold desert of Spiti where the green stops and the rock takes over.
You sleep in villages, not resort towns. Apple orchards in Sangla, a cliff monastery at Dhankar, the highest post office on earth at Hikkim, and Chandratal on the way out over Kunzum La.

Morning pickup from Chandigarh and a climb through the Shivalik hills into pine country. Evening free on the Mall Road and the Ridge.

DAY 03Sarahan to Rakchham

Past the Kinnaur gate and the Karcham dam, then up the Baspa into Sangla valley. Night at Rakchham, right beside the river.

A full morning in the upper Baspa at Chitkul, the last inhabited village on this side of the border, with Batseri and Kamru fort on the way back. Evening transfer to Kalpa.

The green ends here. Khab Sangam where the Spiti meets the Sutlej, the switchbacks up to Nako lake, and the 500 year old mummy at Gue before the run down to Tabo.

Before you book
Kunzum La tops out at 4,590m and you sleep above 3,600m in Kaza. Mild altitude symptoms are normal. The route is built to gain height slowly, with an acclimatisation day at Kalpa. Drink water, skip alcohol for the first few days, and speak to your doctor first if you have a heart or respiratory condition.
